BEEBE BRINGS EXPERIENCE, LEADERSHIP TO FAMILY MEDICINE
From education to training to teaching, Dr. Diane Beebe’s commitment to the University of Mississippi Medical Center is strong.
After earning the BA cum laude at the University of Mississippi in 1980, Beebe came here for medical school. She earned the MD in 1984 and completed an internship in 1985 and residency in family medicine in 1987. She served as chief resident from 1986-1987 and joined the faculty as an instructor in 1987.
Effective July 1, Beebe will become chair of the Department of Family Medicine, bringing to full circle her decades-long affiliation with the department.
“I am privileged to serve my department and the University as chair, particularly during this exciting time of transition for our health care system,” she said. “There are many transformations ongoing at our Medical Center, from the medical school expansion to the University Hospital initiatives to the consolidation of University Physicians.”
Dr. Dan Jones, UMC vice chancellor for health affairs, thanked the search committee for its hard work in identifying a very strong candidate to lead the Department of Family Medicine.
“Dr. Beebe brings strong experience and an insider’s knowledge of our department, institution and state. She has outstanding leadership skills, and I am grateful to Dr. Beebe for assuming this critical role for the institution,” he said.
Beebe was named assistant professor of family medicine in 1989, became an associate professor in 1994 and professor in 1999. She has been residency director and vice chair of the department. She became interim chair in July 2006.
In 2006, graduating family medicine residents recognized Beebe as Outstanding Faculty Member, and that same year, she received the Gold Level Program Director Recognition Award from the Association of Family Medicine Residency Directors (AFMRD). This award is based on tenure, training, scholarly activity, peer development, professional development, and advocacy.
She is listed among the Best Doctors in America and has been recognized several times for teaching excellence. She is a member of the ACGME-Residency Review Committee for Family Medicine Accreditation Appeals Board, after having served as chair of the ACGME-RRC for Family Medicine for a number of years. She also serves on the Academic Council of the National Institute for Program Director Development Basic and Advanced Fellowships under the AAFP/AFMRD.
Beebe is a reviewer for American Family Physician and contributes to the clinical problem-solving series in the Mississippi State Medical Association’s journal.
She said she looks forward to her new role at UMC.
“It is a pleasure to work with the committed people in my department to further the mission of family medicine at the Medical Center,” she said.
