Best Doctors Taps 118 UMC Faculty for Top 2004 List

The University of Mississippi Medical Center boasts 118 of the Best Doctors in America, according to a biannual medical referral guide listing the nation’s top doctors.

“Patients coming to the Medical Center for their care should expect the very best from their health professionals,” said Dr. Dan Jones, UMC vice chancellor for health affairs. “This external validation of excellence should give them an extra dose of confidence that they are being cared for by the best.”

Since 1992, Best Doctors, a Boston, Mass., medical referral company, has compiled a list of the country’s elite physicians and made it available to the public.

According to the Best Doctors’ Web site, “when one of the originators of the Best Doctors concept was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor in 1986 and told he had only months to live, he struggled to find the best doctors and treatment for his condition. After he successfully found the right care, he set out to help empower other patients through information.”

The Best Doctors’ list is compiled by surveying doctors who were previously on the list. About 30,000 U.S. doctors, or about four percent of doctors nationwide, are named to the list each time it’s published, according to the Best Doctors’ site.

The Medical Center has faculty and clinical faculty on the list, including pediatricians, surgeons, dermatologists, anesthesiologists and neurologists.

“The Medical Center should be proud to have so many physicians recognized by their peers at the national level as having the attributes of a ‘best doctor,’” said Jones, who is among the 117 UMC physicians on the list.
